Baptism in Greek is a significant event in the life of an Orthodox Christian. Agia Paraskevi church in Dasos Haidariou, Attika, was the perfect setting for a sunny Sunday baptism, filled with earthy colors and joy.

The baby girl, with her beautiful blue eyes and smile, was the center of attention, surrounded by happy friends and family.

In Greek Orthodox tradition, baptism is a holy sacrament that signifies spiritual rebirth and entrance into the church. The ceremony involves the immersion of the baby in water, symbolizing the washing away of sin and the receiving of the Holy Spirit.

The godmother’s modern dress in shades of blue and the godfather’s black shirt and grey suit added to the colorful atmosphere. The parents looked elegant and proud as they watched their little one receive the sacrament of baptism.

The baptismal gown, typically white and embroidered with intricate designs, represents the purity and innocence of the baby. The priest anoints the baby with oil and places a cross around their neck, signifying their entrance into the Orthodox Church.

After the baptism, the celebration continued at a local restaurant, where everyone enjoyed local food, drinks, and dancing.

After the ceremony, the family and guests traditionally exchange favors, known as “koufeta,” and celebrate with food and drink. The party is a joyful occasion, filled with music, dancing, and laughter.

The godparents play a crucial role in the baptism, promising to guide the child in the ways of the faith. They light candles and hold the baby during the ceremony, demonstrating their commitment to the child’s spiritual upbringing.

Attika, the region where Agia Paraskevi church is located, is known for its rich history and stunning natural beauty. Visitors can explore ancient sites like the Acropolis and the Temple of Olympian Zeus, or enjoy the sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea.
